Can't Get No Satisfaction?
"Sir,” the woman said, “you don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep. Where are you going to get this life-giving water? (John 4:11 CEVDCUS06)
So here’s the story…
There’s this lady from a region called Samaria who went up to a place to collect water. It was a well that many folks returned to from time to time to refill up on water. But this time, someone was sitting there. He greeted her. They proceeded to have a conversation about water. The living water versus the water that was there in front of her – in the well. You see, this man explained, he had this living water that would prevent her from ever becoming thirsty again. And that this water would, in fact, become something of a spring inside her.It would be a spring that would well up all the way to eternal life. The lady, intrigued, said she would like this water he was talking about. She would love to never become thirsty again! So, he suggests that she go and tell her husband and bring him back. She begins to share that she has no husband at the moment. He then shares that he knows all about her past. He knows that she's had five husbands and that the man she was with now was not her husband.Wow! Okay… So he knows all about her stuff. She recognizes that he’s a prophet. She continues on sharing how past Samaritan generations worshiped there. Then makes a point - recognizing he’s Jewish. She references that the Jews say all must worship in Jerusalem. Well, his reply is that there will be a day when it doesn’t matter where a person worships. All that God desires and seeks after is people worship Him in spirit and in truth.Through this whole conversation, she sees him as just some Jewish man.He talks about worshiping in spirit and in truth. He says it doesn’t matter where you worship. He explains that he can give her life giving water which will never cause her to thirst again. Water giving eternal life. She then says something like this. “Well, I hear there’s this guy called the Messiah who is coming. And whenever he comes, he’ll explain everything to us.”He says back to her, “I am he”.The entire time they're talking, she’s under the impression he's just prophet. They talk about some big things – but she’s still in the dark. She does not perceive that the man she’s talking with IS the Messiah. He is the Christ that was foretold to come. It’s fascinating that she sees him as a well informed, well-practiced prophet. SHE and proceeds to tell HIM that the Messiah will come one day and explain everything. After he just explained everything. How often does the Lord speak to us? He speaks to us in so many ways. Through scripture, each another, situations, and songs, for instance.Still, we still look at him and say, “One day the Lord will speak to us and explain everything then”.How is it, again and again we work to figure out this life on our own. We strive and seek, yet to only be temporarily satisfied. The only hope, peace and satisfaction that lasts can come from God. He’s waiting for us to meet him – right there. Right in front of us. Whether we feel it or not. His is the only satisfaction. Now when I say satisfaction, I don’t mean in a temporal manner. I mean a satisfaction deep within. Something that far exceeds what we can feel and see. It’s a deeper knowing in the heart and soul, that we are being redeemed. That we have are free.John 4:11-26
